Serendipity Spinners February 2008
Next Meeting February 16
10 AM - 4 PM (more or less)
January in a Nutshell
Serendipity Spinners Booth at Stitches
-- we still need to make some small bumps. I'll be bringing my
drum carder and it would be great if a couple more could be brought in
to make more bumps.
We have a couple of spots still open for the booth and I'll have the
sign-up sheet with me on Saturday if
you are able to help. Volunteers get a free pass to Stitches! And, it's
a lot of fun to do! Hope you can help.
Nancy Weber, Call if you have any questions -- 650/965-4038
January found us in the meeting room of the hotel even though it was a
lovely day.
Irene was a big draw and we saw people we hadn't seen in too long. It
was good to see
you, Irene. Thanks for scheduling your trip around our meeting. I
understand there are
airline deals for people who fly often to the same place; maybe you
could come to ALL
of our meetings.
Thanks to everyone who carded batts for our booth at Stitches. We need
more. Please
bring the drum carders and fiber back for the February meeting.
Business -
Dues are due. Make your checks
out to Serendipity Spinners and either bring them to the
February meeting or mail them to Lotus.
Sue found place to do web hosting
for $9.95 a month with potentially a few extra months
free AND free domain registration. As soon as she gets her computer
fixed, she'll be
right on it. The expenditure was voted on and approved. The website
*should* be
www.serendipityspinners.org.
Nancy Weber held out the carrot
of free entrance to the stitches market for anyone who
volunteered at any point during the weekend. How are they to know when
your official
shift is? Thursday, the market is only open to registrants. Please help
and sign up with
Nancy. There are still some holes in the schedule. Nancy has, also
volunteered to make
flyers for the booth in the form of business cards.
Ginger showed off the
friendship quilt coverlet to Chris that she had assembled
beautifully. Nancy Weber will give to Chris. Since items in room are
being stolen, Nancy
will show Chris and have husband or son take it to their home.
We got note about lamb's wool being
offered. It is unclear if it is free or for sale. Ginger
might still have the contact information.
Show 'n Tell -
Phyllis is working on her
friendship coverlet for Fiber Artisans. She brought in
Shepherd's crooks that she had made. Each staff is made from Toyon - a
native
California shrub that grows on her property. Each crook had a different
wood for the
curve. They were olive wood, mahogany, and cherry. As with much of what
we all do,
Phyllis has been told, "you could sell those". Also, as with much of
what we all do,
almost no one would be willing to pay enough to make it worthwhile.
Cris Rieser joined us for the
first time. She took Nancy Webber's spinning class.
Welcome, Cris.
Jocelyn came first time in a
long while. She was spinning a rainbow.
Debbie has a question. How to
you easily tell if fiber is superwash in the manner of a
burn test? The group wisdom suggested she try and felt a little bit. If
it felted, it was not
superwash.
Sharolene is crocheting edging
for Friendship squares. She is also working on a knitted
alpaca vest.
Nancy Ferguson is working on
her container of UFOs (UnFinished Objects). So far, she
has completed two big potholders and she's working on a rug. She found
a book she
highly recommends – “Book of Yarn”. The information is at the bottom of
this column.
She says it's a great book, has lots of information on fiber, and has
great patterns. She
brought her souped up drum carder. Her husband added an electric motor.
He's been on a
rebuild-it binge, of late.
Linda Stinchfield showed up.
Since she retired, she's been busier than she can handle
with many hobbies. Her neighbor showed her yarn that she didn't know
how to use. It
was roving! Linda is spinning it for her.
Frank is also working on the
edging for his Friendship squares. He learned to crochet
just for this project.
Kate has also joined us for the
first time. She's been trying to get organized to join for
the last five years. She was active in guild in Alabama years ago. She
is selling two
Ashford Wheels to downsize to fit her house. See her at the next
meeting, if you are
interested. Welcome, Kate.
Nancy Durham made placemats for
Christmas. She brought in samplers.
Anne, also joining us for the
first time, crochets. She is taking fiber hobby one-step back.
She met Ginger at the Museum's Heritage Holidays. Welcome, Anne.
Visit from Irene! It was 18
degrees in Colorado when she left. She went to Monterey and
walked on beach. This is the first trip she's planned and itinerary in
advance. She
discovered that it works. Brought a CD spindle. She did a Cookies,
Cocoa, and Crochet
event as a fundraiser for her church group.
