Serendipity Spinners March 2008

Next Meeting March 15, 08

10 AM - 4 PM (more or less)

February in a Nutshell

----------------------
Sorry for the lateness of the January newsletter. There were several technical difficulties. Sue and Ginger
have worked out the kinks of getting Ginger's notes to Sue. Ginger hands them to Sue on a flash drive
immediately after the meeting and before either of them go to lunch. That way, they leave with Sue.
Nancy Weber brought in a washed white fleece to add to our stash for Stitches. Ginger brought in the
colored fleece that needs to be carded. Much carding was had by all! In order to stretch the colored fleece,
it was mixed with the white. We're all looking forward to teaching with it next weekend.

Old Business:

Lotus: We sent check to Lili Blalock. She sent it back. Someone else will be chairing the Monterey wool
auction this year. She will call Monterey Fair to see who to send our check as the new chair.
Stitches: Nancy is still looking for some Sat spots and Sunday teardown help. Sunday is one hour with
public then teardown. Nancy brought a draft of the business cards she designed for serendipity. We
approved the expense of getting the cards printed at Kinko's. We have no CD labels left from prior years
but agreed that rectangular labels would work just as well and be easier to handle. We agreed we "need"
the labels on the CDs so that people can find us. Our website won't be up by Stitches (unless Sue is
REALLY motivated). Nancy will sign us up for Stitches next year.
Maker Faire is same time as CNCH. Alicia isn't signing us up this year.
CNCH is first weekend in May in Sacramento. Lotus is inviting us to her Dad's place, which is just down
the street. Ask Lotus in advance to stay there. Her father is no longer living there.

New Business:

Treasurer says we dropped below $1000 but first rounds of dues pushed the balance back over.
Sue's computer just came back from repair. We Have A Web Site

Show 'n Tell:

Nancy Weber showed off "Blue Geisha" shawl from Alison Hyde's book in a variegated pink-to red yarn. It
has a beautiful drape. See the book section below for more information on this book.
Carol Lewis has been in hat binge. She made a sort of cross between a 1960's pillbox and a Tam O'Shanter
one strand of a variegated yarn and the rest in black. It makes it the design look more complicated than it
is.
Nancy Durham is babysitting Sofia, the dog. She finished her sweater. It is made from fleece she got from
Nancy Weber and some mystery batt. She is making shrugs for girls in her family from commercial yarn.
Lotus had monster snow on the mountain. She knitted when she couldn't sleep. The noise of the rainstorm
that melted the snow made her think of Dorothy's house for the Wizard of Oz going flying through the air.
Thankfully, Lotus' did not. She knitted three hats from bits & pieces. She showed them off and a felted
bead necklace. She got the idea from a new magazine "Living Crafts.” To make the beads, you choose a
cookie cutter in the desired shape. Put it in a bowl. Fill it with fleece. Add a little water. Finger tap the
fleece. After a short time of tapping, you have felt. She made a necklace with the hearts from her cookie
cutter and beads she had felted around a bamboo skewer. Since this is Lotus and she was having fun, she
made more hearts and decorated them. She was having so much fun, she even Tom Sawyered her husband
into making one.
Ginger left her project at home. She's spinning the best of her white fleece. (Editor's note: the rest of this
line appears like I got it. I sure wish I had a clue as to what it means.) 12 skeins 3-94, G-7 oz each.
Margaret Moore is going to be doing a class at RAFT (resource area for teachers) on hand spinning. She's
been experimenting with 3 minute Kool-Aid dying. She adds an additional 30 sec if the dye is not
exhausted. We agreed to give the leftover batts to Margaret for this teachers class. She showed off her new
cape made by a woman in Santa Cruz from old sweaters. We agreed the woman must get them from thrift
stores. It's a fabulous cape.
Margaret has info to get grommets for CD spindles. Finished her 14th pair of socks.
Sharolene has socks from commercial yarn. She showed a shrug from alpaca. It looks like vest without a
hole for the head. It is super soft, variegated yellow, green, blue, and violet.
Alicia has her coiled cassette tape baskets in an art exhibit. Next exhibit will be textiles if the gallery get
enough.
Chris Johnson is knitting pattern from Alison's book named "Melanie"
Tina had vest with a lot of shaping, the front has a cross-over in an X shape. She is almost done with a
shawl, only one section to go.
Nancy Weber said Chris Wallace loved the coverlet. Her men folk bring it with them for every visit and
drape over her for the visit. It isn't left with her in the home for fear it will be stolen. She would like the
date for next summer's sheep-to shawl at Alameda.
Carol wanted to give very advanced notice of living Nativity. Talk to Carol if you'd like to sign up. It is
five nights (in December) but you don't need to sign up for all five nights. It spans the 15th and includes the
Monday. You may borrow a costume from the church. It is held at the First Baptist church in Santa Clara.
Carol promises it is great fun.
