April in a Nutshell

by Sue Toorans

We were blessed with a lovely day to sit under our friend, the oak, and spin. The ground was a little damp (downright wet) in spots but mostly dry where we chose to sit. We were a small gathering. One young man, perhaps about eleven years old, was at the park with his adults who were doing something in the firehouse all day. We intrigued him and he asked to be taught everything. Ginger taught him how to card on a drum carder. Lotus taught him how to treadle a wheel. Frank taught him how to use a drop spindle. Maybe we've kindled the love of fiber in a new generation. Or not.

Marge showed up for the first time in a long time. She brought her niece, Katy.

Kimberly called us to order.

Our Pres. Kimberly.
Kimberly and Chris S. enjoy the beautiful day.
Kikumo, Sakawako and Carolyn set up to spin.

Old Business

Since the quilt has gone to a new home, there was none.

New Business

Some of us attended the fiber sale last month that Glenna Harris hosted. On the theory that the deceased fiberholic had once been a member of Serendipity we were given what Glenna Harris believed to be our share of the proceeds. That was $400.

Treasury: $1600 +400 from the fiber sale.

Since we have more money than ever before (Hmmm. We're a not-for-profit and we're flush. Those for profit companies are broke and getting government bail-outs. Maybe we can teach them something.) This money would be very well spent on some workshops or other programs. Think of what and who you'd like to take a workshop from and make those suggestions in the next few meetings.

Reminders

Spinning at Retzlaff Winery. June 6 from 10 Am - 4 PM $5 entry fee. Fleeces: Sandy, Sue Reuser, Janet Hepler, & much more. There is a potluck lunch.

Sue: finally remembered to bring the basket mentioned in previous months. It is made from hollow coils of telephone wire. It is the experimental piece.
Sue's wire vessel

Frank: finished the purple and orange from last month. He finished several balls of bleached Merino two-ply. Now he's drop spindling gold and turquoise. At the Gem and Jewelry show he bought stone disks to make drop spindles like Kimberly's. He hopes to use chopsticks for the spindles.

Kikumo: has a new job so the spinning wheel has been getting spider webs.
