August Nutshell

by Sue and Ginger

First of all, please accept my apologies. For whatever reason, the first disc of photos from the meeting is completely blank. The second disc has two photos of my show 'n tell and one of Carol's Woolie Winder and that's all. Therefore, this newsletter has no photos.

Second and most important, we're being kicked out of the park on our usual day and moved to the following week. That is September 26th. Repeat -
NEXT MEETING SEPTEMBER 26.

Please remember that the Serendipity site is supposed to be a resource.  Check out the rest of it.  There is a calendar page with dates of fiber events.  Some will have links.

We'll get to this further down in the newsletter, but I (Sue) just have to tell the story about our fleece from Monterey.  The guild voted that I could spend up to $50 on a fleece for our CD spindle booth for next year.  Lotus did say, rather emphatically, that she did not want to wash the fleece, too. At the auction, there were a couple I had my eye on, but the bidding went too high.  In desperation, I bid on the fleece that I got.   We spent $36.25 on it.  On my way out, I stopped at the Morro Fiber Works truck to see what it would cost to get the fleece washed since Lotus was not interested in doing it.  I explained to Shari McKelvy who I was and what we were going to do with the fleece and asked if she had a guild price for just washing.  She did.  It was only $15.  I said aloud that it only put me $1.25 over budget and I'd do it.  At that point she changed her mind and named a price of $13.75 for washing.  Again, I agreed.  Then she changed her mind, yet again, and said that, since Serendipity gives her quite a bit of business, she'd wash our guild fleece for FREE.  At that point I just thanked her profusely.  So, if any of you are wondering where to get your fiber processed, send it to Morro Fleece Works.  There is a link and information on our Textile Links page. Tell her you are from Serendipity so she knows we really do send her business.

On August 26th, the washed *AND* picked fleece arrived on my doorstep.

Treasurer's report

$1851.82 before the check to the Monterey wool show.  Sue carried the check and handed it to them personally.  They were very pleased.
Money ($50) was voted for Sue to buy a fleece at the Monterey wool auction for next year's Stitches booth.

Old Business

What do we want to do with the pins we were going give to the Serendipity Sheep to Shawl team?  Answer - give them to those that were going to participate on the team, the guild officers and others..
What do we want to do for classes? No one sent any ideas to the list
Lotus wants to know if we can get on Judith Mckenzie's List sometime? Lotus will contact her and find out when she'll be in our area and how to get on her list.
Who is the woman that does weird chunky yarns? Lotus thinks she is in the Grass Valley area.
Another suggestion was a dye workshop with natural dye.

New Business

Lotus brought mailers from various places including  Lamb Town in Dixon (for a link, see our calendar page)
Marcia mentioned that Glenna Harris is demonstrating on October 10 at Pumpkins in the Park at the Discovery Museum.   She also mentioned a
Wildlife Days  demonstration on Oct 4.  Unfortunately, we didn't catch where this was.

Show 'n Tell

Marcia: spinning green wool. Nothing to show
Lotus: is working on the yarn for the conference scarves for next year.  It is really bright.
Nancy D.: finished knitting pumpkin hat from commercial yarn for nephew.  It's really cute.  She's been busy
Chris S.: crocheted a cute little blue hat. The gauge in pattern was wrong. It should have fit her but was actually toddler sized.  She is crocheting purple alpaca motifs to be joined for scarf for her niece.
Kimberly: showed new, really pretty spindle.
Jennifer: (new) spun a bamboo silk blend spun on drop spindles. Now she's plying this into a 3 ply green yarn
Carol: sis pinning on her little wheel.
Sue: took a textile entrepreneurship class. The class project is to bring a pretend product to market. The team's initial project was a yoga carry all
bag made from an old pair of blue jeans.  The bag works really well for all kind of other carrying needs.
Ginger: has been knitting socks. she has one pair done of color that she didn't remember ordering in red, orange, white green, turquoise & yellow.
She has one sock done in browns that she did order.  The other sock is ready to graft toe.  Since this IS Ginger, she also started what will be a square
lace shawl. So far one side of edging done.

And that's August in a nutshell.

If you have news or pictures of interest to the group please send it to spinner@serendipityspinners.org
