April Nutshell

by Sue, Ginger and Frank

It was a sunny cool day, the cold people stayed in the sun and the fair skinned people stuck to the shade. We had a nice turnout.
Aviva ran the meeting.

Treasurer's Report

We have $1,243.00 in bank plus 2 checks to deposit.

Old Business

We paid $300 to the museum for the room upstairs in the firehouse for our Dec 11th Holiday party. Marcia negotiated no police escort for us.

We are still accepting ideas for classes.

New Business

Aviva was emailed by the Monterey County Fair Wool Show folks. They will be accepting entries for the Monterey County Fair. Go to http://www.montereycountyfair.com for on-line entry firms.

Show 'n Tell

Frank: finished his felted, knitted bag-blue & purple with lots of sparkle. It is going to Sue. Everyone at the meeting thinks he should make a sparkly bag for himself. He has not gotten his spinning wheel repaired, so he was back to drop spindling his cat's hair.
Sparkles good in the sun.

Ginger: got a quill for her Majacraft wheel. Really chews through cotton when she gets her rhythm but still getting the new rhythm comes & goes.
It looks like a lethal weapon.

Chris S.: knitting a badger, a snake, and 2 mushrooms to donate to a medical auction for a friend. Badger Badger Mushroom is an internet joke(YouTube.badgerbadger). She spun up half of the purple /green / rainbow roving from last month's fiber feeding frenzy. She is thinking the singles might make a good gift as is for lace knitting friends.

Margaret: showed off her newly felted bag a la Frank's style. Blues and greens and purples in a nice size for a wine bottle. She is trying to divest and get funds for wheel bag. She sold a lincoln merino cross fleece to Ginger. She is still spinning green wool and angora. (Wearing a beautiful white lace shawl).

Angora.
Shawl she bought years ago.

Aviva: knitting a hoodie in natural colored brown Polworth yarn in a lace pattern. It is the same pattern she knit Sage a few years ago. She is trying to finish so she can knit up the lace yarn she is currently spinning. Orange with sheen. 250 yards now, she is predicting it should be about 1000 yards when all of the fiber is spun.

Lotus: worked laying out her blanket squares with a quilting friend earlier this month. They came up with a 8x6 square layout. The think she needs 6 more squares though, so Lotus is spinning and knitting more squares. Her husband, Keith, fell last week and broke his hip. They didn't realize at first that it was more than sore. When they go to a doctor, he had to have the ball screwed back onto neck of the femur surgically. He is currently on pain meds.
Spinning more green yarn.
Working on an orange/yellow square.
Lotus got stung by a bee while walking in.

Carol: Spinning same bag of wool. She went to Colorado for a big figure skating event and met Irene for lunch. Irene still has a big stash. Irene showed Carol her current knitting project (not from handspun). Carol is also knitting a blue lace shawl.
Still spinning same white wool.

Victoria: showed crocheted socks she made from commercial yarn. They are her first pair of socks. She went to Minnesota to see her mother for Mothers Day and was surprised to find a fiber festival. She bought a prize winning llama fiber at a real bargain for angora. She saw a llama shearing: one person to hold the head, one to hold the tail, and one to shear.
Beautiful day.
Crochetted socks.

Sharolene: didn't feel like lugging in her wheel, so she was drop spindling camel silk mix, about 8 oz., that Aviva and she both bought at CNCH. Her drop spindle is pretty - turned wood stick and a sparkly weight.
A beauty of a drop spindle.

Amelia, Andreas and Marie: Amelia is learning to spin. She finished her first spindle full on a drop spindle. Mom Marie (Richardson) came here 10 years ago, borrowed a wheel from Lisa Friese and learned to spin. Daughter Amelia inherited a spinning wheel from a relative. Son Andreas came, wearing on orange sweater knitted by mom. Marie is knitting a bigger version of the sweater for his dad (her husband). Marie is spinning singles for lace. Andreas is leaning how to treadle a spinning wheel.

Jennifer: came late with after taking her cat Ninja to the vet's.

And that's May in a Nutshell.
