October Nutshell
by Ginger, Marcia, Sue and Frank
October was another poorly attended meeting. Where is
everyone? My (Sue) excuse is that I'm doing shows with my jewelry
(www.SueToorans.etsy.com) on weekends. This leads to the
next point. November is
election month for new guild officers. Serendipity needs a new
president, at the very least. Please elect one. When/if I
hear from the other officers, I'll send email about the other vacancies.
On a somber note, weaver Nora Roberts died in her sleep the night of
November 2. Nora was always quite the scholar. She knew a great
deal about the many Native American weaving traditions of both North
and South America.
Although she had a floor loom, her love was braiding, diagonal
plaiting. And some of her most beautiful work came after her diagnosis
of metastasized abdominal cancer almost two and a half years ago. The
braids were her chemotherapy, keeping her alive and vividly engaged
until very recently. I am unaware of anything more about
arrangements or funds. She was a member of Santa Cruz
Handweavers. Perhaps they will know.
Our October meeting had more people than did the September one.
Still, not many people are showing up and concern was expressed about
paying $300 for a room to have our potluck in for only three to five
people. Concern was also expressed about the potential for a
strong paint smell in the room. The painting is supposed to be
done on the 11th so there will be a week for it to calm down
somewhat.
Please come to the potluck on Sunday, the 19th. I believe we
might still have picnic supplies, but to be on the safe side, you might
want to bring your own dishes. There is electricity, running
water and a refrigerator in the firehouse kitchen. This is also
traditionally the first meeting the new president chairs. And
don't forget the gift exchange.

Jocelyn is
taking sign ups for the CD spindle booth for Stitches West. It is
in mid February next year.
Show 'n
Tell
Ginger: crocheted pink, rose and white afghan (of commercial
yarn)
Lotus: showed off a little knitted stuffed critter. She used
seed stitch instead of the stockinette called for by the pattern. It
really added a nice texture (on the torso). Lotus was spinning shades
of brown wool -- walnut dyed by Phyllis then given to her in a
de-stashing effort. And socks.
Jocelyn: was knitting Tele-Tubby hats for daughter and friend(s)
for Halloween. Her daughter and friends got T-shirts plus silvery
fabric to sew on as the TV screen on
the tummy, then Jocelyn in a moment of generous insanity offered to
knit hats with the appropriate antenna (shaped with pipe-cleaners
inside I-cord).
Carol: started a shawl.
Nancy D.: was finishing up a
sweater.
And that's October in a Nutshell.
