August Nutshell (plus a report on the wool auction)

by Ginger and Sue

Sue and Frank spent the day selling Sue's jewelry at the San Jose Pride celebration in Discovery Meadow park.  We had a lovely day so I can only assume it was a lovely day in Kelley park, too.  As usual, attendance was very low.  Only Aviva, Cookie, Ginger, Carol, and Rusti with her son, Alessandro attended.

Treasurers Report

Old Business

The Sheep to Shelter was discussed.  Carol sent email to the guild with that information.

New Business

Claudia Ward of the Monterey wool auction would like to have our email list.  Any of you who do NOT want me to give her your email address send me email as spinner@serendipityspinners.org by the end of September 2011 and tell me so.

Last month, on Aug 28 Spindles and Flyers was spinning at the Exploratorium. Susan Maynard was the contact for that.  They have also been invited by the Arboretum to go and spin plant fibers.  Spindles and Flyers is 50 years old this year.

Mendocino fair has fiber exhibits.   Aviva will email the details

Carol found Knit2DyeFor (sic) (Perhaps it was this website http://wool2dye4.com/catalog/index.php Wool2Dye4).  They have nice undyed yarn at 2 kilos for  $56.  She's thinking to get some for warp for the Sheep to Shelter weekend(s).  She suggest it be a byow (bring your own weft fiber) weekend.  That could be interesting.  Carol has an eight harness baby wolf. Cookie has looms she is willing to bring.  Does anyone have any other ideas for weaving two weekends with portable looms?  Send email to spinner@serendipityspinners.org.

Show 'n Tell

Rusti: brought some of the fibers she has from her grandfather's business.

Bits of yarn

Cookie: is making squares with scraps from demos, woven on a little sampler loom then safety pinning in position then joining with commercial black yarn.  She also wove backstraps for weaving

The growing afghan

Woven strip

Aviva: has spun 8.2 ounce (1700 yds.) for lace shawl

Shawl yarn

Ginger: is knitting a scarf with 45% quiviut, 45% merino, 10% silk yarn. She finished a kid blanket crocheted from commercial yarn with stuffed monkey faces. It will go to United Way fundraiser at her company

Monkey faced afghan

And that's August in a Nutshell.

Monterey Wool Auction

Frank and I (Sue) went to the Monterey Wool Auction if for no other reason than to deliver Serendipity's donation to Claudia Ward.  Claudia was very appreciative.  Our funds were used to buy the breakfast treats the morning of the auction (~$30), add some funds to the People's Choice award ($20 or $25, I can't remember which) and the rest went into the general fund.  Currently, the wool auction is breaking even.  That's good news.

I have scanned my auction booklet.  In it, I wrote the realized prices for all the fleeces (and some notes of my own).  Those of you who have attended an auction where the fleeces fetched exorbitant prices will notice that this year, the prices realized were much more reasonable.
