December Nutshell

by Ginger and Sue

11:35 and none of the triumvarate of our co-presidents so Sue helped.

Lotus, Nancy D. and Ginger demonstrated at the Museum's Dec. 3 Tea.  We were set up in a lobby area on the Museum side of San Pedro square's prototype - with shops in a big building.  Already some shops.  We were set up with a prime view of carolers, Fiddler Road, school orchestra, and school choir.  Santa Claus showed up with a couple of elves.

New Business

January is Demo Batts month.  We create batts for our booth at stitches.  Please bring any drum carders that you might have.

Treasurer's report:  $848.26 in the bank.  Dues are due in January.  When you submit your money, please attach a note as to what classes, workshops or other ideas you have as to what we should do with our treasury this year.  Cookie offered to a crochet form of Saori Japanese free form weaving.  (I hope I got that right.)  It sounds interesting.

Holiday party:  We had a fine time.  Pictures are later in this newsletter.

Announcement:  CNCH  (held next May in Oakland) has opened up registration for its classes.  All of Judith McKenzie's and some others are already filled.  From what your intrepid newsletter editor has learned, Ms. McKenzie's classes were filled within minutes of registration opening.

Nancy D.:
Shared her Dec. 3 stories.  Went to Churchill Manitoba, saw polar bears.  Road Scholar ( no longer Elder Hostel).  Brought her yukilile.  She's in a band, all ages.  Most have straps bue her yukelele is old and lacks the peg at the foot for the strap.  Got an ides from a woman that had a hook in the sound hole under the strings to anchor the "bottom" end.  She has a persimman tree.  She put them out at the curb with a pay box and a sign.  She's making money at it.

Aviva: spinning a very fine alpaca/tussah mix.  She took the hint that Sue learned from Judith McKenzie's fine spinning class - treadle slowly.  Next up is something dyed with cochineal.

Phyllis: knitting quiviut.  The fiber has a story - While she was in Norway she wanted to buy some Spelsau fiber (a native sheep).  She asked a farmer and was given a fleece.  In Beyen, she went to a state supported craft store.  She asked for more since the 1st fleece was small.  For 25 Kroner / kilo.  There were 2 cardboard barrels in the cellar - one white and one grey.  She got the grey.  Half a year later she got it out and found it had lots of guard hairs.  As she de-haired it, she realized it was Quiviut.  She's making a 6' scarf for her son.
